The Beatles - 'Get Back'

10/12/2021

When it was announced that there would be a new Beatles docu-film and accompanying book released, it seemed that the internet when crazy.

The world, it appears, never got tired of the Fab Four from Liverpool.

The Fab Four, however, did tire of the world.

On April 10th 1970, a Paul McCartney 'self-interview' was seized upon by the media, and it was reported that The Beatles were over. Fans lined up outside of 3 Savile Row, London, which was the head offices for The Beatles' company, Apple, and eyewitnesses say that it was "heartbreaking" and "devastating" to be a fan at the time.

The film, entitled Get Back, after a song on the 1970 Let It Be album, has been assembled by Peter Jackson - who is best known for being the writer, producer and director of the 'Lord of the Rings' films. Using footage which was left over from the original 1970 Let It Be film, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the film is expected to be around two hours long and is about the making of the Let It Be album, which was the last released album by The Beatles but not the last that they recorded (this title goes to Abbey Road (1969). The project was announced on the 50th anniversary of the band's rooftop performance, 30th January 2019.

Having been sent a review copy of the book, I was delighted when it arrived almost two weeks before the general release date. I was even more excited when I opened the book up and began to look and read through it:

It is absolutely gorgeous.

The pictures are of such good quality and colour that it is almost impossible to believe that they were taken over fifty years ago, and there are some details about the band in that book that even I didn't know about, which doesn't happen often.

My only negative, however, is the price of the book, which on Amazon is available (currently) at a discounted price of £29.75, but is normally available for around £40. Whilst this is not an overly large amount of money, it is a lot to pay for a book no matter how high the quality is. The price makes it unobtainable to everybody as, had I not been sent a copy to review, it is likely that I would not have been able to afford a copy as I am currently in full time education and unemployed as a result.

However, if one can overlook the slightly unreasonable price, then overall this book is a beautiful addition to any book collection, and even more so to that of a Beatles fan. It is jam-packed with transcripts of interviews and interviews, as well as off-the-cuff remarks which John, Paul, George and Ringo made on tape.

Get Back feels special; personal, even... and if you do not yet have it, then I urge you to somehow get your hands on a copy. You won't regret it.
