Sir Paul McCartney's Green Submarine Docks In Liverpool

10/04/2021

Grandude's Green Submarine is the sequel to Sir Paul McCartney's 2019 work, Hey Grandude! which was met with mixed reviews when it was released. The title is a nod to The Beatles' song, Yellow Submarine, on which McCartney has equal songwriting credits with John Lennon. 2021 marks 55 years since the release of the Yellow Submarine single.

On 2nd October, a replica of the green submarine, paid for by Sir Paul, appeared at Liverpool One's Waterstones store, and stayed until 8pm on 4th October before being donated to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, not too far from the bookshop.

When I stopped by Waterstones to get a photo of the submarine, I was met by two ladies who were exhibiting the submarine. Natalie Campbell and Terri Ann Hayes were present on the main day of the event (Saturday 2nd), which Hayes said was a "huge success", with over one hundred copies of the book being sold on the first day alone.

There was a prize draw on 2nd October, with 55 prizes, 5 of which were books signed by Sir Paul. It is currenly unknown who won those.

The four-day-event was paid for by McCartney himself, Hayes said that he was "keen to make sure the submarine was in his home town." Both Hayes and Campbell read the sequel to Hey Grandude! but had not read the first one, so could not say which they preferred.
