Lesley-Ann Jones - 'Bohemian Rhapsody: The Definitive Biography of Freddie Mercury'

One of my favourite authors, Sunday Times bestselling author Lesley-Ann Jones has written a biography of the great Freddie Mercury, the revered front man of rock band, Queen.
First published in 1997, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is a good window into the life of the Zanzibari-born Farrokh Bulsara, following him from the very early days of his life until the very last, told by somebody who met him and spoke to him.
This is not just another well-researched story about a man who has become a legend. No, this is a book which just exudes care. Jones travelled to Zanzibar to find Freddie's birth certificate, for example. I always love how the author's work seems so personal, and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is no different. She has truly astounded me once again, and I am in awe of her work. One day I hope to write something which seems as perfect as this book does.
My only criticism is that this book seems to be more like the biography of the band, Queen. Whilst it focuses on Freddie's childhood a little, and then on his later life, the vast majority of it seems to be around the band... and before you say "yes, but Freddie spent a lot of time with the band", I am way ahead of you. I know he did. But there doesn't seem to be a great deal about his personal life during his time with the band - outside of his time in Munich.
But honestly, the crossover of Freddie's life and Queen's isn't a huge problem for me. I would actually rather read about Queen than just Freddie. I loved being able to find out how the events which were being described affected not only Freddie, but Brian May and Roger Taylor and John Deacon as well.
So actually, it isn't much of a criticism. I loved this book. I can't wait for the release of Jones' new work, a biography of ex-Beatle John Lennon, which comes out in September.
