Eric Clapton - 'Clapton: The Autobiography'

02/22/2020

My latest read is 'Clapton: The Autobiography' by Eric Clapton, the guitar God. It was published in October 2007. I bought it cheap online after reading Pattie Boyd's (his ex-wife) autobiography (and of course, listening to some of his music), and wanting to know more about the man who had been important enough for one of my idols to break up her marriage for.

The book itself got off to a bit of a slow start, and there were times when I considered putting it down - but after the fourth or fifth chapter, I was enthralled and fascinated. Eric Clapton has been through so much, and what  he says in interviews can only scratch the surface. The book, which I highly recommend for anybody with an interest in music and legendary guitar work, was unputdownable and fast paced.

It covered every important chapter of his life, as an autobiography should, with a particular focus on his second marriage, which was to Melia McEnery. I personally don't find the recent years in any autobiography very riveting, but it was clear that Clapton is happy with how his life has turned out, despite tragedies such as the accidental death of his son, Conor, in 1991.

Clapton's writing was so poignant that I was reduced to tears and fits of laughter at different points within the pages, and I don't think I have ever read a book that made me feel so empathetic and sympathetic towards someone who seems to have it all, but has suffered so much. Since the events described in the book finish in 2007, I think it would be nice to have another edition published which is more up to date.

I will be reading this book again because I enjoyed it so much, and I feel like I didn't take it all in the first time. The wish for a more recent tale of events is the only criticism I have of this book, and it can hardly be considered as one - this book was published thirteen years ago, so nothing I write is going to get another edition published.
