An Audience with The Scaffold at the Everyman Theatre

10/30/2022

The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool played host yesterday to two gatherings of people, all of whom had come to see The Scaffold; a comedy, music and poetry group from the city. The group consisted - and still does - of Roger McGough, John Gorman and Mike [McCartney] McGear, who is the younger brother of bassist Sir Paul, one of the four Beatles.

The three were interviewed by author Spencer Leigh, who has written several books regarding musicians, and a book about the Cavern Club, which is sold there.

I attended the matinee show, and was treated to almost three hours of giggles, laughs and sing-alongs. The group performed several of their famed comedy sketches, and treated us to little ditties. The only slightly distracting thing was that a lot of their sketches were not as funny as they once might have been because times have changed - for one of the sketches, context even had to be provided. I appreciated this, as I otherwise would not have known what was so funny, however it did ruin the comedic effect when everything had to be explained beforehand.

Mike McGear even teased that he was going to reveal what the 'Aintree Iron' was, as mentioned in their song Thank U Very Much (1968).

The audience was well engaged, and the interviewer well chosen. Leigh knew what he was talking about, and what his subjects were!

The price of the signed posters, available during the interval, were, however a little bit steep. £20 is too much to pay, whether the proceeds were going to charity or not. Of course, I did still buy one, so perhaps that is a silent contract and approval of the price.

Overall, what a show!
